Jon Green is a Markham-based artist that is beginning to take his music career seriously. Growing up, he and his brother did their best to stay out of trouble and make things easier on their single mom. Now, he’s using his past as motivation to become the artist he knows he can be.
Jon first fell in love with hip-hop when he heard his brother playing J Dilla and DJ Premier beats around the house when they were growing up. Since then he’s grown to appreciate all music genres, but nothing more than classic hip-hop.
Jon’s debut single titled “Autumn Freestyle” is reminiscent of that classic sound he fell in love with growing up. The new song is out on all streaming platforms now and the official music video is on YouTube.
For his first release, “Autumn Freestyle” is a bold choice, but it’s also his most authentic sound. In an industry that is being dominated by trap drums and autotuned melodies, Jon’s decision to release something classic is refreshing.
The production of the new single is nostalgic. Pitched-up samples come in and out of the beat, while boom-bap drums keep the song moving from start to finish. There are classic breaks splitting things up, and Jon floats freely and proudly throughout the song.
And although his flow is nonchalant, his rapping and messaging is both motivational and inspiring.
The music video, which was directed by Sebastian Luca, features the same nostalgic energy of the song, fun and chill, with Jon and the rest of the talent providing good vibes throughout.
