To be honest, we all love good comfort food, but a southern one? Yeah, that hits different.

6ixBuzz got word that our city is actually home to a dope southern food joint and we had to check it out and even chat with the owner.

Chef Chen is the mastermind behind Chen Chen’s Hot Chicken which is quickly gaining in ranks as the city’s new southern comfort food hot spot. Their menu specializes in a mouthwatering array of southern-inspired cuisine including Nashville Hot Chicken.

In an exclusive interview with 6ixBuzz, Chen tells us about his inspiration for opening up this halal-certified food spot and talks about some of the hottest items on the menu that you must try this summer with family or friends.

Chen is originally from Nashville and said he fell in love with the city’s iconic hot chicken almost 20 years ago and before he moved to Toronto in 2017. According to him, it was hard finding the same style of food he grew accustomed to.

Filling the gaps in Toronto’s food scene

In 2018, Chen decided to share a few of his roots and culture with the rest of the city by creating a pop-up restaurant and as we know it today as; Chen Chen’s Nashville Hot Chicken.

“Toronto’s food scene is very diverse but ironically doesn’t offer much in terms of Southern comfort food despite being very close to the states,” Chen said.

Chen Chen’s Hot Chicken’s best-selling items are undoubtedly the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich and its spicy Asian counterpart, the Schezuan x Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich.

Both are served with slaw, pickles and savoury aioli on a toasted brioche bun.

The Schezuan sandwich fuses Nashville with Asian flavours such as ginger, garlic and schezuan peppercorns.

He also mentioned wanting the side dishes on his menu to be just as good as his hot chicken.

“I think a lot of fried chicken restaurants have good chicken but they neglect the side dishes that are important to the entire dining experience,” he said.

“Sides are an important part of southern soul food.”

With that said, you can find savoury side dishes such as creamy mac n cheese, bacon potato salad, Nashville hot elotes, spicy fries, cheesy fries and sweet chili cauliflower.

“We try to stay true to our southern roots,” he said.
