The grand opening at Scarborough Town Centre featured an inaugural ribbon cutting, a DJ, free giveaways and many of the local Black business owners whose products now line the shelves of a store in a major shopping mall.

Black Owned Toronto originally began as an Instagram account at the start of the pandemic when the founder and CEO, Kerin John, was looking for ways to support Black-owned businesses in Toronto.

After the death of George Floyd, the page went viral, with many people searching for ways to support local Black-owned businesses themselves.

John then launched a website and online searchable directory, which gave Black small business owners the platform to share their products and services with consumers.

John has since taken things nationwide with the launch of Black Owned Canada.

“When 2020 started, one of my biggest goals was to support more Black-owned businesses. But it was surprisingly difficult to find and tell what businesses in the city are TRULY Black-owned. So, I created Black Owned Toronto, in hopes of discovering more Black-owned businesses,” reads a statement from John on the website.

Some of the online shop’s most popular items include haircare, skincare, spices and seasonings, clothing and art.

While the new store is no longer accepting applications for vendors, they encourage Black business owners to keep checking their website.

You can shop from local Black-owned businesses on Black Owned Toronto’s website or at the new store located in Scarborough Town Centre.
