An Ontario Woman Diagnosed With Stage 4 Colon Cancer Keeps Getting Her Life-Saving Surgery Postponed Because Of The Pandemic

Imagine having to postpone what could potentially be life-saving surgery.

This is the reality of Cassandra Di Maria from Woodbridge, Ontario. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2020 and has been waiting to undergo surgery since. However, it kept getting postponed and was even cancelled.

“Now, I’m waiting on my next big surgery,” Di Maria told CTV News, “I have no idea when this surgery will happen and I’m at a standstill.”

The 30-year-old’s cousin, Vanessa Pilieci, took to multiple social media platforms to speak on Di Maria’s behalf.

According to Pilieci, by the time doctors realized her cousin had cancer it had already spread to her colon, ovaries, and liver.

She also shares that the surgery was supposed to happen in November of last year but was “pushed back numerous times” only to be cancelled completely as a result of the Government of Canada’s mandate to halt non-urgent surgeries because of the pandemic.

“This means she will be off chemo for at least three months, giving the cancer a chance to multiply and spread to every single part of her body. This could potentially render her chances for surgery USELESS, meaning she will die,” Pilieci wrote in an Instagram caption.

“When will hospitals be equipped to handle the influx of Covid-19 patients AND the rest of the population that has other illnesses, besides Covid-19?”

Di Maria also has a wedding planned for April 2023 after getting engaged last year.

For now, Pilieci is calling on the government to re-think their decision and to give her cousin “a fighting chance at life.”
