Netflix to Begin Charging for Password Sharing in 2023

Netflix is set to begin rolling out a paywall for password sharing in early 2023, according to The Wall Street Journal.

This news comes as the streaming giant has acknowledged that at least 100 million people are currently sharing passwords for free, and it's finally looking to monetize this activity.

Various sources report that the popular streaming platform will debut this transformation in the U.S., likely before extending it to other countries.

Back in the early months of 2021, Netflix announced its resolve to make customers pay for sharing their accounts with others. According to them, an astonishing 100 million people had been doing so for free.

The first step in testing this new paywall was an experiment in Peru, Chile and Costa Rica, during which it would cost around $3 to $4 Canadian to share your account with two people.

The company has also recently launched a new ad-enabled tier for $5.99 CAD/month that offers most of the Netflix film and TV series catalogue with ads playing roughly four to five minutes every hour.

It remains to be seen whether or not the paywall experiment will be successful, but it's clear that Netflix is looking for new ways to maintain its growth and capitalize on password sharing.

It'll be interesting to see how this story develops in the months ahead.
