Netflix series leads to discovery of girl missing for 6 years

Six years after she was abducted by her mother, 9-year-old Kayla Unbehaun has been found safe in North Carolina.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children confirmed the news on Monday, revealing that the girl was spotted at a secondhand clothing store called Plato's Closet.

According to WLOS, an employee of the store recognized Kayla from a "well-publicized media," which is believed to be her feature on Netflix's rebooted series "Unsolved Mysteries."

After confirming the identification with law enforcement, she was reunited with her father, Ryan Unbehaun.

The story began in 2017 when Kayla's mother, Heather Unbehaun, abducted her daughter despite only having visitation rights.

Since then, the family has been searching tirelessly for the young girl and even created a Facebook page to raise awareness of their plight.

Thankfully, these efforts have paid off, and Ryan expressed his relief in a statement released by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children:

"I'm overjoyed that Kayla is home safe. I want to thank the South Elgin Police Department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and all of the law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case. I also want to thank all of the followers on the ‘Bring Kayla Home' Facebook page, who helped keep her story alive and were instrumental in spreading awareness. We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning."

The family now has a chance to start anew as they rebuild their relationship in private. In addition, this reunion highlights how important it is for families affected by such tragedies never to give up hope, no matter how difficult it may seem. There are always glimmers of light in even our darkest moments.
