International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant Against Putin Over Alleged War Crimes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced this Friday that they are issuing an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The court accused him of being responsible for war crimes committed in Ukraine.

In their statement, the court alleged that Putin is, "responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation."

"There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr. Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes."

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations of war crimes and atrocities occurring during its invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, the Russian Foreign Minister commented, "The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for our country, including from a legal point of view."

Prior to the warrant, a U.N backed inquiry uncovered Russian acts of systematic torture and death towards civilians as potential war crimes being committed. Ultimately, it was their discovery of the abduction of Ukrainian children that propelled the ICC to issue the arrest warrant.
