$3.5 Million Worth of Stolen Cars Found and Repatriated to Canada from Shipping Containers in Malta

Dozens of cars that had been stolen from driveways across the Greater Toronto Area have been returned to Canada after being discovered in shipping containers in Malta.

York Regional Police said that 64 vehicles, valued at $3.5 million, were found inside the containers and had been destined to be sold illegally.

The repatriation was made possible with help from the Canada Border Services Agency and the Malta Port Authority.

"The suspects entered the vehicles and reprogrammed ignition computers, allowing them to be driven away utilizing a new key," police said in a news release issued on Friday. "The vehicles were driven directly to the Port of Montreal or loaded into shipping containers in Toronto and transported to Montreal by rail. The containers were then loaded onto ships and vehicles delivered to buyers in Africa and the United Arab Emirates."

The vehicles were taken as part of an auto theft ring dubbed "Project Majestic" that was targeted at high-end cars such as Lexus, Toyota and Honda sport utility vehicles.

Police arrested 18 people in March 2021 and seized 70 stolen vehicles valued at $4.5 million.

At this point, it is not yet known if any additional charges will be filed over the theft of the Malta-recovered cars. The investigation remains ongoing.
